Sandy Smith's Outsider Art Fair Outsider Art Fair | Sanford Smith, Art Dealer and Impresario, is hosting the 9th annual fair at the Puck Building in New York City the weekened of 26-28 January 2001. As usual, it promises to be an effusive display of raw talent. The premise of Outsider Art goes back to before World War Two, when people (initially psychiatrists) began to recognize the pure, unvarnished talent of some of "their" patients in expressing themselves is visual and visionary ways.
Now, writing about Outsider Art is certainly not new for this page. Indeed, it's always fun to have an excuse to jump in and write about this subject some more.
What's exciting and different right now is how soon this show is in the future. And I am making tentative plans to attend again. Admission is reasonable; only $25 [US] for a three day pass to the show, and you'll need that time if you want to really study the works on exhibit. It also gives me the chance to see my friend Margaret Bodell, one of the curators of the Wall Street Viewing Room who exhibits works of people she has found in Connecticut.
You can often meet a number of artists who sometimes are brought by the diffeent dealers to be introduced. There's also a really top-notch cafe (not cheap, but, considering New York City prices, not unreasonable either). Follow the map I have linked to for directions. And if you see me there, say hello.
at the mouth of the Eight Mile River Eight Mile River Watershed | A group of interested citizens have written to Senators Dodd and Lieberman to ask their support by endorsing a study to consider the Connecticut's Eight Mile River Watershed as a candidate for a wild and scenic river designation this next congressional session. Given the Dubya's Cabinet nominees I remain skeptical of passage, but then, Governor Rowland has been a surprizingly good supporter of open space issues since his second term was assured. So, maybe...
Nevertheless, this endeavor needs support, so get in touch with your Connecticut Congressman to tell 'em to push this project.
about David Gwynne's Groceteria site America's Grocery Stores | David Gwynne, perepetetic and sardonic webmaster and host of PlanetSoma and his journals, known the OtherStream ( as in "...not the mainstream...), also has a third site about Nortamericanos love of the Supermarket. Did You Bring Bottles? is that site. Gwynne's premise is simple, and I'll let him speak about it for himself:

"You can learn an awful lot about a place by visiting its supermarkets.
Supermarkets are one of the most important and overlooked elements of American life. I'm fascinated by them, and my road trips always include visits to the local chains, from Winn-Dixie in the south to Giant in Baltimore, from Cub Foods and Rainbow in Minneapolis to Kohl's in Wisconsin. Harris Teeter, Alpha Beta, Piggly Wiggly, and the "holy trinity" of Safeway, Kroger, and A&P: I've done more than my share...
I'm really picky about my supermarkets. By this, I don't mean that I shop in the newest, sleekest stores with the most fabulous produce departments. On the contrary, I'm more drawn to smaller and older stores which are perpetually in danger of being either closed or "upgraded"...."
the Corner Store Now, Gwynne's take on this subject in intriguing. Sort of a cultural historian approach. While I agree on his preference for older small versions of supermarkets, I gotta confess to enjoying the megasuper stores as well. Just that they are, usually, much too far for me to drive to to consider convenient. Besides, the three closest supermarkets are two IGAs (one an Adams IGA in Deep River, the second an independent grocer in Higganum Center) and the Moodus Grist Mill Grocers. Two of these stores are three aisle butcher shops with groceries; the Deep River Store has 6 aisles. ...big time, eh?
So I find another site, The Corner Store put up by the National Building Museum more in line with what I see everyday. So much for super Stop and Shop.
site updates | Well, updating some of the pages on rondak.org is no doubt long overdue, so this weekend I took to doing this. Alas, I was able to update only three pages:
  • legal links
  • correctional/forensics mental health and
  • environmental issues
I expect this shall be increasingly important, especially since visits to the site have almost doubled in the past couple of weeks alone (the site was doing a healthy average of 700 to 900 weekly hits but since Christmas week it has done 1700 and almost 1500 in the past two weeks). Thanks to whomever has provided links to the pages. Sure can tell the difference. Furthermore, I've also applied to have the Corrections page added to the True Justice web ring. Wish me luck.
    Out fer now!     ~Will Brady

    about "Short Notes"
"Short Notes" was the title of a column I wrote while working for a newspaper in the Adirondack Mountains some years ago. The format was similar to what you'll find here, except augmented with pictures and maps. The subject matter shall sometimes be personal, at other times comments on events or situations of which I am aware. Comments, suggestions welcomed but not always acted upon.
