a tribute to Tom | I'm no fan of pages offering paens to pets ...nevertheless, Tom (who is pictured here) was with me for some 18 years | tom the cat He was born on my bed while I was in it fer gosh sakes! | Tom was some of Miemioux, grandsom of TutTut the feral Manx who moved in with me while friends Bud and Dan and I

were cleaning fish in the backyard one day | The entrails were too enticing | And, thus, his grandma moved in | Fast forward a couple of years, after about three litters from TutTut, Miemioux (so named by my friend BillP) and Tom was born | On the bed, right next to me | I like to recount that he was actually born on my chest, but that may be a nostalgic memory | Over the decade and 3/4s that he lived, he moved without fuss (just got in the old Ford Bronco while I was packing up) and slept the entire trip |
Once to East Haddam, Tom gradually became the elder statescat for a brood that ranged in size from three to eight | No one seriously questioned his primacy | His territory was expansive, people from a mile away would report seeing him |
As he got older, and in his last days, he ate less, went outdoors more often | He eventually got to the point where he would not eat | We elected to keep him in and succeeded to catching him a few times | We even made an appointment for the vet to euthanize him | It never went through, and I'm just as glad | The night before that scheduled trip, he got out once more, and traveled somewhere (we don't know where) settling under a bush or a tree or some favorite rock ledge | He went on from there | 18 years | I'll miss him

e-mail | due to circumstances beyond my control, I have had to change one or two of my old e-mail addresses | New mail can continue to come to the @rondak.org address | A completely new address is now will-b@earthlink.net | Regrets for this inconvenience |
