Christo + Jeanne Claude ~ renowned the world over for huge installations of fabric in settings that would otherwise seem odd [to say the least] took 26 years to convince New York City's political leadership to approve the constrution of "The Gates," an elaborate colorful display of 7,500 steel trussed arches with saffron colored curtains | It is by far the most accesible of all their projects | We went to see it on opening day | What you have on this and the following pages are a document of just a small segment of the overall display | We visited the lower corners, from the Metropolitan Museum to Columbus Circle | The installation spanned the entire park | It was fresh, breath-taking, inviorgating and alive! | Thank you Christo and Jeanne Claude for persevering with the Vision and to make it real |

Precursors: In the days before the visit to The Gates, it seemed everything was getting wrapped up...

The East Haddam Bridge, the New Britain Museum, even a neighbor's house! Naturally, we had to check it out | We bussed into New York...

The first sighting was at 86th Street and Fifth Avenue, just north of the Metropolitan Museum of Art |

Even the Museum had a hint of orange bunting [see the roof]
It was from here we began our walk |

The Walk: A woman graciously agreed to take our picture so we took one of her | That's the Frick Museum in back of her |

Gates were different widths, conforming the the paths in the park | Hundreds of people had worked to put it up in just over one week's time |

Everything, even the pedestals were free standing so when it gets dismantled, it is as if the gates had never been there |

As we meandered, looking to the left, and the right, up hill and down,
the Gates were an ever-present phenomena |
