Christo + Jeanne Claude ~ renowned the world over for huge installations of fabric in settings that would otherwise seem odd [to say the least] took 26 years to convince New York City's political leadership to approve the constrution of "The Gates," an elaborate colorful display of 7,500 steel trussed arches with saffron colored curtains | It is by far the most accesible of all their projects | We went to see it on opening day | What you have on this and the following pages are a document of just a small segment of the overall display | We visited the lower corners, from the Metropolitan Museum to Columbus Circle | The installation spanned the entire park | It was fresh, breath-taking, inviorgating and alive! | Thank you Christo and Jeanne Claude for persevering with the Vision and to make it real |

We arrived early enough to watch the Gates being unfurled | It was interesting to see how every detail had been planned |

A woman tried unsuccessfully to talk the workers out of the plastic sheathing as a souvenir | Even the discarded supplies got carted away |

The intent was twofold; first to keep the experience pure ~ nothing's to end up on E-Bay; second, to make sure the park stays clean |
Orange was everywhere | After Christo and Jeanne Claude signed everbody's work vests even the assemblers became part of the Art |

The first impact of the Gates is visual | As we wander further into the park, their presence is unavoidable |

...almost, that is | Curiously, there are none by the bandshell | Maybe that's why the policeman is consulting a map |

At times, the views are contenplative and at others, a celebratory mood is palpable | Watching the curtains flap in the gentle...

... morning breeze was exciting, and lifted the Spirit | Some wore orange to commemorate the event |
